Jane Canfield

My work revolves around what I see in the landscape, whether that is urban or rural and I enjoy travelling to new areas (usually camping) to gain inspiration.

I grew up in a family of Artists with my father Tony Canfield being a huge influence on me. As a family we were always off camping and Dad would be up early; sketching, painting and absorbing the landscape. He always wanted for me to be an oil painter.

Recently I have been exploring reduction, simplification and a move towards abstraction.  I prefer to work en Plein Air. I have always been fascinated by colour and shapes, often a small, cropped section of a vista catching my attention. Colour plays a large part in my work.

There is 'nothing new under the sun' and I think as artists we constantly absorb from those super talents that have come before, which for me are; Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Elioth Gruner and James McNeill Whistler. The tonalist works of Whistler and particularly Australian Clarice Beckett are particular influences. My mentor and friend Colin Orchard in the UK and the likes of Ivon Hitchens and Milton Avery. But no matter what influences I have, as an artist I try to pursue my own path.
